The Ready Files
Anatomy of a Go-Bag.
It's zones, not stuff. Pack it that way and nothing hides.

A go-bag isn't a pile of stuff you hope is enough. It's a set of jobs the bag has to do — and every good one is built the same way, in zones. Get the zones right and the bag tells you what it's missing before you ever need it.
There are five. Walk them in order and you'll never stare into a half-packed bag wondering what you forgot.
01 — The five zones
— Fire & heat
A way to make heat, cook, and boil. Warmth and a hot meal do more for morale and clear thinking than people expect.
— Water
Carry some, and a way to make more safe to drink. (Ready File 002 covered this leg in full.)
— Medical
The zone you hope stays zipped. Carry what you actually know how to use, and know where every piece lives.
— Tools
A blade, a light, cordage, a way to fix and cut. The zone that quietly solves problems the other four created.
— Navigation
Know where you are and where you're going when the phone can't tell you. Paper doesn't need a battery.
02 — Pack by zone, not by pile
Lay the five zones out on the bench and fill each one before you close the bag. A gap in a pile is invisible; a gap in a zone is obvious. This is how you catch the missing tourniquet or the stove with no fuel — on the bench, not on the trail.
03 — Buy the bag, or build it
Our house kit line, LYNX Survival Systems, is built around exactly this idea. It runs from full loadouts down to shells you fill yourself: Full, Paracord, Pocket, Patch, and Empty. Buy it packed, or buy the empty bag and stock the five zones yourself. Either way you end up with the same thing: a bag organized by job.
A few pieces we'd reach for to fill the zones:
