Water: The Rule of Threes.
The oldest survival heuristic there is — and the leg people skip.

There's an old rule that's been passed around outdoors circles forever, and it holds up because it sorts your problems in the right order. The traditional survival heuristic goes like this: roughly three minutes without air, three hours without shelter, three days without water.
It's a heuristic, not a stopwatch — the point is priority. Air and shelter usually take care of themselves at home. Water is the one that quietly becomes a problem on day three, which is exactly the window the 72-hour rule asks you to plan for.

01 — The leg people skip
Ask most people what's in their kit and you'll hear about lights, batteries, a stove, maybe a knife. Water comes up last, if at all — probably because the tap has never failed them. But stored water runs out, and the standard planning guidance is to keep enough on hand for at least three days per person. When that runs low, your plan for the next glass matters more than anything else in the bag.

02 — Filter vs. purifier, honestly
Here's the general-knowledge version, no marketing numbers attached. A filter is a physical strainer — it catches the larger stuff like sediment, and the bugs big enough to get stopped by a fine mesh. A purifier is built to go a step further and address the smallest contaminants a filter can miss. Neither is "better" in the abstract; they're built for different water. Match the tool to where the water's coming from, and when you're unsure, the broader capability is the safer default. That's the whole decision.

Where We're Pickiest
Water gear is where we're pickiest, because it's the one you can't fake in an emergency. We stock filters and purifiers from names you already trust — GRAYL, Sawyer — and if we wouldn't drink through it, we don't sell it.
